“There is no doubt that an economic crisis causes a lasting shift in who is going to do well and who isn’t. And the companies who come out the best are the ones who use this time as an opportunity to rethink how they do things,” says Robert Courteau, chair of the Information Technology Association of Canada (ITAC), which represents the country’s information and communication technology firms. “And in terms of communications, I think we’re really on the cusp of where we’re going.”

When the Toronto District School Board (TDSB) decided to invest in a new network, it wanted a provider who could give each of its 560 schools an ample pipeline to the Internet and capacity for not only current video and broadcast technology but new applications that might emerge. Last December, after a rigorous Request for Proposal process, the TDSB awarded the $39-million, 10+ year contract to Cogeco Data Services, a network solutions provider that not only mapped out a customized solution, but actually built a working model that showed how they would deliver on their promises. “We demonstrated to them that we can future-proof their network,” says Cogeco Data president Ian Collins. “It’s the way we work: we’ll always reinvest in our infrastructure to meet the needs of our clients.”
